TOTAL CHAOS HIP-HOP FORUM A Discussion on Hip-Hop Politics :
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
San Francisco
Featuring:
Jerry Quickley, Malkia Cyril, Rosa Clemente, Troy Nkrumah, and Davey D
"It's been nearly three years since the first National Hip-Hop Political Convention was convened in Newark, New Jersey. The purpose: to mobilize the hip-hop generation to leverage its cultural power toward political power and create a national agenda for change. But in the wake of 9-11 and the Bush Adminstration's War Without End, does hip-hop really have the power to create change on the civic and federal level?"

NPR Monthly Broadcast RC06: DECEIT
Neighborhood Public Radio Monthly Broadcast RC06: DECEIT
Saturday, April 14, 2007, 1:00-5:00 pm
Location: Southern Exposure
"Deceit, upon first glance, is generally felt to be a bad thing. Big, greedy corporations spend billions to persuade the public that they're our best friend, often hiding behind smiling faces and happy little cartoon characters, all to more effectively get away with murder. Political officials lie through their teeth, and their powerfulness seems, at times, inversely related to their honesty. At the same time, we universally celebrate tricksters, beloved pranksters able to use deception for heroic and hilarious ends (think Bugs Bunny or the Yes Men). We're eternally in search of good stories, ones successfully able to suspend our disbelief and excite our imagination. Paradoxically, sometimes the use of deception or untruth is the best way to point to a deeper truth, expose horrendous lies, or provoke inquiry. Occasionally in human dealings, honesty isn't always the best policy; in certain situations, it's quite possibly the worst. This program will explore the pros and cons of deceit. Curated by Ben Furstenberg. "

From his 1967 Paragraphs on Conceptual Art
"The editor has written me that he is in favor of avoiding 'the notion that the artist is a kind of ape that has to be explained by the civilized critic.' This should be good news to both artists and apes."

Man Kicks Work of Art
[from the April 8 edition of artdaily.org]
Man Kicks Work of Art at Milwaukee Art Museum
MILWAUKEE.-A man was arrested for beating a work of art at the Milwaukee Art Museum. According to the police, a 21-year-old Pewaukee man wandered about the museum for more than three hours and then removed his shirt and started beating Ottavio Vannini’s The Triumph of David from 1640. The work portrays the final part of the biblical story of David and Goliath. Museum CEO and Director David Gordon stated that the works are in the trust of the public.
Joseph Ketner of the Milwaukee Art Museum said, "It just feels terrible. It feels terrible. I've been in the profession for 30 years, and I've never seen something like this happen. Some of my colleagues have been here for 50 years and have never seen something like this happen. This is a random and unfortunate act."
According to investigators, the attacker claimed to be disturbed by the image of the head of Goliath and started kicking it. It was not destroyed, but damaged. The Milwaukee Art Museum stated it thinks the painting can be repaired and has begun that process.

North is West / South is East: 32 Maps of Los Angeles
Book, edition of 1000
2002
"North is West / South is East is organized around a series of drawings collected from strangers I approached at Los Angeles International Airport and asked to make maps of LA. Around half were drawn by people who actually live in Southern California. These tend to trace commutes, diagram neighborhoods, and mark the locations of events and environments significant in the lives of their makers. The rest were made by visitors from all over the world — Australia, Mexico, Hungary, New Jersey. These start to picture the idea of a Los Angeles that precedes it: palm trees and traffic, surfers and freeways, Baywatch, money and grids. Taken together these chance encounters begin to describe a place at once real and imagined. And in drawing from the generosity of strangers at LAX, the project hopes to disturb the instrumental logic of the airport, itself a non-place, where the only reason you visit is to get yourself somewhere else."
