Meet the Zet Family

In its fourth season of artists' films, the Moldovite Season, Waygood's Little Jewel Cinema is a study of one family, the six members of the Zet Family.

In ZET GARDEN II artist Martin Zet focuses on each member of his family, his wife, himself and their four children. Each fortnight a different film featuring a different member of his family will screen in Waygood's Little Jewel Cinema, a peephole cinema in a former shop-front at 31 High Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne.

This season is the Moldovite Season, named after a semi-precious stone found mainly in the Czech Republic, were Martin and his family live.

Martin Zet explained:

"My family has 6 members: 4 children, my wife and me. I have been working with all of them, sometimes with their agreement, sometimes without. This is
a chance to introduce results of this collaboration/exploration to the public. Each one will be in some sense the main character of one projection."

Martin will bring his family across from the Czech Republic to Newcastle for the preview, and family negotiations permitting, the four children will sit in the shop window of the gallery (there is room just for four chairs there)
during the evening of the preview.

Martin added:

"This time in ZET GARDEN II I want to unveil how many things coming from my hands are in fact results of the whole collective, not really team ? nobody in the family wants to collaborate with me any more. What I find exciting bothers them."

ZET GARDEN was a huge installation in Kunstnernes Hus in Aarhus, Denmark, in 1996. One year after his father had passed away and Martin was redefining his position within the world, species, society, family.

Martin Zet explained:

"The first installation ZET GARDEN in Denmark 1996 was constructed on the line leading from ancestors to descendants, from my great-grandfathers to our children. Basic data was accompanied with some side products - objects,
big stone sculptures, sound recordings, videos, photographs, photograph of my father's work (my father was also a sculptor), recorded, replaced and reconstructed installations our children used to make in our court, in our garden. In the centre of the installation there was a small inflatable basin filled with warm water. Five year old Adámek - as the most important 'piece'
(and the last - youngest link - at that time) was during the installation, and for a couple of days around the opening, living there with me - playing,
resetting the objects, bathing and enjoying the space."

Waygood Founder and Creative Director, Helen Smith, met Martin Zet in Bucharest in 2006. She was at MNAC, Muzeul National de Art Contemporana, the major contemporary art gallery in Romania, which is located in a wing of what was Ceausescu's Palace.
Helen explains: "I spotted a beat up, red transit van, way off in the distance. It was hurtling along followed by a cloud of dust and was definitely heading my way. I watched as it got closer and eventually disappeared from view.

Presumably, it had come to rest at the foot of this, Buckingham Palace, sized building. Twenty minutes later Martin Zet introduced himself and told me that he and his fellow travelers had just driven to Bucharest from Berlin. I can recommend this as an effective way to meet new people to work
with. Choose your spot carefully and wait. Martin is just one of the artists and curators I met that day."

Martin Zet currently lives in Libušín, a village to the north of Prague, Czech Republic with his wife and children and Golden Labrador named Iphigenia.

For this 4th season of the Little Jewel Cinema Waygood has invited Martin to bring his whole family across from the Czech Republic to Newcastle for a week prior to the preview. Family negotiations permitting, his four children
will sit in the shop window of the gallery (there is just room for four chairs there) during the evening of the preview on Saturday 18 August between 4.30-8pm.
